Satisfy Your Curiosity About Dental Implants

Is It Painful to Receive Dental Implants?

At Pearl Dental Associates, we place a high value on patient comfort. We’ll take steps to ensure that you feel little to nothing during your placement surgery. You may experience some soreness afterward, but it isn’t uncommon for patients to feel well enough after their surgery to return to work within a day or two.

Why Does the Implant Process Take So Long?

We understand that you’re eager to receive your new teeth and experience all the benefits that will come with them. However, we have to carefully plan each step of the process to give your restored smile its best possible chance of success. We also have to make sure your body has adequate time to bond with the dental implants before we give you your permanent new teeth and expose the implants to the everyday pressures of eating.

I Smoke Cigarettes. Does That Mean I Can’t Get Dental Implants?

Tobacco use can slow down your healing time after surgery and increase the risk of dental implant failure. However, that doesn’t mean that individuals who smoke cannot receive dental implants. When you visit us for your consultation, we’ll make sure you fully understand the potential risks involved in the procedure so you can make an informed decision about treatment.

What Causes Dental Implant Failure?

Implant failure is quite rare, but it can occur in a small percentage of cases. Sometimes, it happens because the body does not properly bond with the implants following the placement surgery. In other instances, implant failure occurs because an infection attacks the tissue around an implant, compromising its base of support. Usually, diligent oral hygiene is enough to prevent this type of infection.

How Many Dental Implants Will I Need?

We can replace a single missing tooth with just one dental implant. If you’re missing multiple teeth, you may need two or more implants. In cases where we perform full mouth reconstruction, you may need six or more implants per arch to support your new teeth. During your consultation, we’ll be able to give you a more concrete idea of exactly what your journey to a restored smile will involve.

I’m Unhappy with My Regular Denture. Can You Help?

It may be possible for us to place dental implants in your jaw and then retrofit your existing denture to snap onto the implants, thus making it much more stable. However, if your regular denture is old or does not fit you quite right anymore, we may need to make a new denture for you after we place your dental implants.

Why Might I Need a Bone Graft?

Adequate bone support is one of the primary contributors to successful dental implants. Unfortunately, the jawbone tends to deteriorate after tooth loss, losing density and height. A bone graft builds up the jaw so it is able to give implants the support they need in order to thrive.
