What is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns get their name because they literally cap your teeth. They are custom-made to cover individual teeth, improving their appearance, strength, function, and shape. Dental crowns are typically used for patients with decayed or damaged teeth. Our dentist will take impressions and images of your affected tooth, and then recommend the best type of crown for you. We have beautiful E.Max® crowns, but we also offer CEREC crowns that only take one appointment for placement.
What are the Benefits of Dental Crowns?
Patients enjoy many benefits from crowns, but here are some of the most popular advantages that you’ll enjoy:
- Protection from additional decay
- Strengthened teeth
- Reshape teeth
- Improved appearance
- Confident biting and talking
- Masked tooth discoloration
- The ability to replace silver crowns
- Can restore dental implants
- Durable and long lasting
- Restore decayed, cracked, or damaged teeth
E.Max® crowns are milled off-site from a solid lithium disilicate block. This material has the color and finish of natural teeth so that you’ll have a perfect smile after the restoration has been completed. The lab uses CAD (computer aided design) software to ensure that the crowns are a perfect fit for your mouth and your teeth. Unlike traditional crowns, E.Max® has a very low rate of poor fits or refits.
Dr. Salem has chosen E.Max® technology for our practice because she feels that it gives her patients the best blend of beauty, durability, and convenience.
How Do I Get a Dental Crown?
Most patients require only two appointments to be fitted for these crowns. At the first appointment, Dr. Salem will remove the infection, prepare your teeth, and take the images required to create your crowns. She’ll also fit you with temporary crowns while your permanent crowns are being created. At the second appointment, she’ll place your permanent crowns. Once you’ve been fitted with your permanent crowns, you can care for them just as you would your natural teeth.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?
Our custom-made crowns can last a lifetime with proper care. The most important step you can take to extend the lifespan of your dental crown is to practice good oral healthcare at home. Brush and floss your teeth daily using fluoridated toothpaste to keep your smile healthy. Additionally, visit our office for routine dental checkups and cleanings to ensure the longevity of your dental crown.
