Pearl Dental Associates owner Dr. Teresa Salem has accomplished extraordinary feats in her career, including raising five children as a single mother, taking in foster children, exponentially growing her dental practice after being a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, and the list goes on. In February 2019, she received Diplomate status in the International Implant Association thanks to her charity work and achieving clinical excellence in dental implant techniques and outcomes. This award is given to a small number of elite dentists that have committed themselves to more than 350 hours of continuing education and placing more than 150 implants, many under the supervision of world-renowned, Miami, FL-based implant expert Dr. Arun K. Garg, who conducts continuing education seminars for the Association.

Providing Compassionate Dental Care Across Borders

While Dr. Salem truly loves running practices and performing dental surgery in Holbrook and Scituate, MA, her compassion for helping people knows no bounds. After training with Dr. Garg in Miami, FL, who she credits for her successful return to dentistry, Dr. Salem decided to volunteer her time and skills to his Foundacion de Dr. Garg in the Dominican Republic. Doctors that volunteer their time pay their own expenses on these missionary trips, from roundtrip airfare to everything in between. Patients show up early in the morning and wait all day in the hot sun just to be seen by one of the doctors. It’s common to treat patients and perform dental surgeries for 10 to 11 hours each day.

“There was a 22-year-old woman that looked like a young teenager. When she opened her mouth, it kind of broke my heart when I saw two missing front teeth. Restoring her smile was incredibly rewarding for me because I know this will open doors to a better quality of life, employment, and relationships. It’s unbelievably fulfilling to deliver life-changing care and develop collaborative, long-term relationships with other dentists during these missions.”
